Electric and magnetic fields, or electromagnetic fields (EMF), are linked together and form electromagnetic waves. Activities such as power generation produce EMFs and radiate emissions as a side effect of generation. However, very strong electric and magnetic fields endangers health and life, therefore it is necessary to limit the range of the EMFs and their associated radiated emissions.
At wind farms, for example, it is common for radiated interference and magnetic interference to influence other fields. For instance, nearby model-airplanes crash, or house cables (pipes) near wind farms might make strange sounds. Often, it is very difficult to measure such interferences correctly because it is a radiated emission emanating from a large area with no centralized chamber. Thus, shielded cables are used to reduce the amount of radiated emissions. In the case of old installations, it is very difficult to exchange unshielded cables with shielded cables, and it’s close to impossible in huge installations. Exchanging old cables with new ones is also a very expensive option. Furthermore, even with shielded cables, magnetic fields can still appear.
In order to maintain the strict emission targets, it is necessary to use either additional filters or inductive absorbers which work at radiated frequencies and help to reduce such emissions by absorption.
